The Museum of cosmonautics

The state Museum of the history of cosmonautics named after K. E. Tsiolkovsky in Kaluga – the world’s first and Russia’s largest space Museum.

Hours of operation: mon. Thu. Fri. sat. sun. – from 10.00 to 18.00 (ticket office is open until 17.30), Wednesday – from 11.00 to 21.00, Monday – day off; last Friday of month – sanitary day.

History: the Kaluga Museum of cosmonautics was created with the direct participation of the scientist-designer of space technology Sergei Korolev and the first cosmonaut of the Earth Y. A. Gagarin. The Museum was opened in 1967 and is a large research and scientific and educational center. With I982 G. Kaluga space Museum is the lead Museum carrying out scientific and methodical guidance and coordination of the activities of the museums space profile of the country. In 1993 the Museum became one of the major cultural and educational institutions that have special public significance.

The themes in the exhibition: Unique exhibition of the Museum reveal the history of the Russian spaceflight from the first artificial satellite of the Earth to modern long-term orbital stations.The Museum presents only a small part of the Museum Fund, which has more than 60 thousand units of storage. Comprehensively presents the scientific heritage of Tsiolkovsky, the founder of theoretical Astronautics. Of particular value are the few original exhibits, which had been in space flight: descent module of the spacecraft, which was our Soviet cosmonauts, the glove is from the emergency space suit, which had worked in open space cosmonaut A. P. Alexandrov, genuine automatic return capsule Raduga and others. We were first put into orbit a spacecraft “Vostok” with Y. Gagarin on Board was an exact copy of the spaceship “Vostok”, on Board which made its first flight into space, Yuri Gagarin, located in the center of the room. Among the exhibits you can also see an exact replica of the first artificial Earth satellite, the real lunar soil, the space suits of the first astronauts with ejection seat, space food and other elements of the system of life support of astronauts in flight.

Color in silver-grey tones: the combination of grey concrete, white stone, aluminum and glass makes the building light and extremely easy. The Museum is the best monument to Tsiolkovsky. Currently at the Museum is the second phase of the Museum, the opening of which is planned for the 50th anniversary of the Museum, that is in 2017.

Entrance ticket price: Children under 16 years free admission. Students and pensioners – 100 rubles, 150 rubles for adults.
